Stress - Why Do We Sabotage Ourselves? Stress Relief Is Here

Nobody wants stress, right?

Nobody looks for stress, right? Well then why do we do so many things to inflict stress on ourselves? For instance, we continuously leave for work late. We are late for a doctor's appointment. We are late for a meeting. We are late for a dinner date. And on and on. Why?

So here are the problems in more detail. Do any of these relate to you? Or do these drum up other situations in your life that are probably causing stress? We need to be at work at 8 am. We know it is a 45 minute commute if all goes well. So we leave at 7:15 and off we go. Well the first stop light you hit just when it turns yellow. Two minute wait. Then the meter to get on the freeway is acting up. Extra 4 minutes. Traffic is a little heavier than normal and wham, you arrive at work at 8:10. Your boss notices as you run in and try to get the day started. There may be a few requests already waiting for you. The boss comes over to discuss about being late. You say for the umpteenth time this year that you left on time but traffic was bad and so on. You are already stressed and it's only 8:20 am!

O.k. let's look at a very simple solution. How about leaving at 7 am? Well you say "but I might get to work at 7:45? So what! So you arrive early, you have time to put your things down, walk over and get a cup of coffee and slowly get into your day. Or at worst, start working early and accomplish more every day. How would that do for your career? How about then your boss coming over and recognizing that you are early every day. Do you think their opinion of you would change? So you have stopped your stress, accomplished more and your boss has a better outlook on you. All for just leaving 15 minutes early. I have been so amazed over the years of being in management to see both sides of my employees. I can tell you that the ones here early and are more organized more often than not are the ones that get raises and promotions.

This can go into the other instances we discussed above. Late for a doctor's appointment and heaven forbid they are on time, now you have lost your spot and it will take even longer or they reschedule you.

Being late for a meeting goes along with our discussion above about work but can be even worse due to the fact their usually are more management level people in meetings. Again you don't look good in their eyes.

How about a dinner date? So the eagerly awaited date with your wife starts out bad and she is unhappy. Nothing better to pay for a $100 meal and leave upset, right?

Again, situations happen. But I am rarely and I say rarely every late for anything. That is because I plan and know the importance of other peoples time and I know the importance of reducing or eliminating stress.

Stress is dangerous. Start reducing it by making these changes in you life. It really does not take much.
